Well known Industry figure John Smith has recently stepped down from his role as company director and chairman of JJ Smith after 55 years' unbroken service.

Commenting on the many industry changes during his time, John recalled how UK machinery manufacturers like Wadkin, Robinson and Rye originally dominating the supply chain in the 50s and 60s. Then moving in to the 70s and 80s there was the emergence of the European manufacturing heavyweights SCM, Homag and Biesse, firstly selling through single company agents, such as JJ Smith and latterly establishing their own UK based distribution networks.

However there was, and still is room for the independent niche machinery suppliers and as result  JJ Smith continue to successfully promote and sell  its equipment in the market place, now with the fourth generation family members on board who John is sure will continue to steer the company in the right direction for many years to come.

So yes, as John recalls, while there has been a sea change in technology; the basic facets of working with wood, ie, sawing, planing, shaping, drilling and sanding remain the same after all these years … its just quicker!
