Extractly Ltd recently supplied and commissioned an internally-sited, multi-bag shaker unit, to extract dust and woodwaste from a newly-installed Morbidelli five-axis CNC machining centre, at Display Logic’s manufacturing facility in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

Display Logic is a specialist manufacturer of creative bespoke retail display products and visual merchandising solutions. With over 20 years in the business, and a wealth of in-house talent, the company has gained an enviable reputation for delivering innovative and cost-effective display solutions to some of the High Street’s biggest brands, including: GAP and Selfridges, The White Company and Linda Farrow’s luxury eyewear stores, as well as work for The Museum of London.

As director Madelene Sharpe explained: “Display Logic provides a multi-faceted service; from creative design and CAD solutions, right through to manufacture and installation, and we strive to maintain the highest quality standards, whilst remain competitive, by investing in the latest technology to deliver our innovative, bespoke solutions.” The decision to add to the company’s capabilities with the nesting CNC machine was taken earlier in the year, and the unit was delivered to site mid-May. “The CNC arrived on the Monday, and by Wednesday SCM’s engineers had completed the installation”, said Madelene. “Extractly had planned delivery of the bagging unit to coincide and, with installation completed on Tuesday, electrical work and commissioning was undertaken on the Thursday; by Friday morning we were in production!”

The 4250m³/hr three-bag shaker unit comfortably extracts waste from a single CNC machine, and the installation also includes a convenient clean-up point for vacuuming around the machine and workpieces

When it comes to dust extraction, Extractly also provide the complete package and, with a growing team of highly-experienced design and installation engineers, have the capacity and flexibility to deliver a straight forward installation, such as this one for Display Logic, through to a complete new centralised extraction system for multiple machines, including installation and commissioning of energy-saving Ecogate® systems. The unit installed by Extractly is the logical choice when extraction is required for a single high-speed CNC installation, or where dust-producing equipment needs to be located at a distance from the main extraction system.

With a powerful 5.5kW self-cleaning fan, the MK3 shaker unit is capable of transporting waste-laden air at a rate of 4250m³/hr – via the flexible connection at the machining head and through a section of Nordfab QF® ductwork to the 250mm diameter inlet on the unit. Internally, unique swirl baffles spin the waste and distribute the bulk of it, evenly, into three heavy-duty polythene collection bags. Finer dust is separated and filtered through an array of 27 high-glaze terylene needlefelt tubes; allowing clean air to return to the working area, at ambient temperature.

DOL electronic controller manages operation of both the fan and the shaker

With a compact footprint of less than 2m², this unit provides a total filter surface area of over 18m² and a total collection capacity of 13.7m³. The standalone unit is also fitted with a 0.18kW auto-shake vibration motor which is designed to dislodge the dust that’s collected on the inside of the tubular filter media; allowing it to drop into the collection bags below. A direct-on-line (DOL) electronic controller manages operation of both the fan and the shaker – controlling the shutdown routine to ensure the extraction fan is idle before activating the shaker motor which is mounted on top of the filter unit.

“We were really pleased with the efficient way Extractly managed this project for us,” concluded Madelene. “Even though this was a just a simple install, I was still impressed with the attention to detail and communication with our production department. Extractly will be taking care of our LEV testing in future, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend their services for any size of installation.”
