Accsys locks away 500,000 tonnes of CO₂ in Accoya® wood

Accsys has announced a key milestone in its mission of ‘Changing wood to change the world’: over half a million tonnes of CO₂ eq (equivalent) are now locked away in Accoya projects worldwide. This achievement makes Accoya a powerful contributor to climate-positive construction.

Each one cubic metre of Accoya captures and stores the equivalent of 802.4kg of CO₂ from the atmosphere. Accsys has now sold over 643,666m³ of Accoya worldwide* and a total of 516,578 tonnes of CO₂ eq has been locked away since the first Accoya boards were produced in 2007. This is comparable to the emissions of 255 million litres of petrol consumed**.

Accoya’s sustainability story begins with the fast-growing, responsibly sourced softwood trees used in its production. These trees act as natural carbon sinks, absorbing CO₂ from the atmosphere and converting it into carbon-based sugars that fuel their growth.

Through Accsys’ proprietary acetylation process, the wood is transformed at the molecular level to resist moisture and decay, creating a highly durable material that locks away carbon for longer, with an industry leading warranty of up to 50 years. Its longevity means that during its lifespan, two full generations of new trees can grow and sequester even more carbon - amplifying its environmental benefit.

By offering a durable, high-performance alternative to slow-growing hardwoods and less resilient softwoods, Accoya helps reduce pressure on endangered tropical forests and supports the shift toward more sustainable building practices.

“This is a huge milestone for Accsys and we’re proud to be helping the world build better,” says Gillian Edwards, Head of ESG and Communications, Accsys. “Every cubic metre of Accoya used is a step towards a more sustainable built environment. With 100% of our timber sourced from certified sustainable sources, Accoya is a high performance alternative to resource depleting or heavily polluting building materials, keeping carbon locked away and out of the atmosphere.”
