SR Timber – a leading importer of specialised timber products, and best known as the UK’s largest importer of roofing batten – is reporting that its diversification into timber panels is paying dividends as that side of its business continues to deliver solid growth.

The company – which is based in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire – grabbed the opportunity to expand into the timber panel sector by offering a range of products that are used in the manufacture of bespoke wooden kitchen and furniture products.

It has focused on one core product type – solid wood edge-glued panels, which originate from wood species including European oak, North American white oak, Scandinavian pine (knotty pine), knotless pine, European beech, European ash, tulipwood (yellow poplar) and American black walnut.

It is introducing some new products to the range: 100% FSC teak that uses D4 glue so it can be used inside and outside in finger-jointed and full-strip modes; poplar in full strips of 12–30mm thickness (suitable for painted furniture); and three-layer solid wood panels in oak and American black walnut, which are a very stable product for kitchens and tabletops.

In developing its collection, the company is focused on supplying bespoke kitchen and furniture manufacturers, as well as carpenters, joiners and general builders looking for new or alternative supply chains.

SR Timber’s trading director Shaun Revill says the company is offering high-quality products, a consistent supply of stock, quick turnaround times on deliveries and very competitive pricing.

“Our edge-glued timber panel products have been an exciting development for our business. We have clearly tapped into a sector where furniture manufacturers appreciate what we bring to the market, and our growth over the last couple of years is testament to that,” says Shaun.

“Offering reliability of stock quality and supply, as well as responsive customer service, is what we do best in other parts of our business, which is why we have become the number-one supplier of roofing batten – and that now applies to the panel side of our business.

“We work closely with leading panel producers across Europe, South America and Asia, regularly receiving shipments into our warehouse in Sutton-in-Ashfield, resulting in the continuous availability of fresh, high-quality stock.”

All of SR Timber’s panels are sourced to the same exacting standards of quality and sustainability, with all timber being purchased in accordance with the EU Timber Regulation (EUTR).Its panels are available in full-length stave construction (full strips), and its worktops are finger-jointed. Each hardwood panel is individually plastic-wrapped for protection and is supplied with square edges, allowing it to be machined to any profile.

Shaun adds: “Our panels are manufactured at carefully selected third-party production plants, and we only work with suppliers who demonstrate robust working practices and have years of experience in manufacturing, which allows us to offer the highest-quality panels.

“Our dedicated staff, led by Simon Cunnold, trading manager of our Engineered Timber Division, have more than 25 years’ experience in importing timber panels, which means that our wealth of knowledge allows us to source the best wood available from a global network of manufacturers who have proven track records in supplying timber panels.”
