Barbour ABI report reveals a strong shift toward multipurpose living in bedroom design

Bedrooms across the UK are undergoing a major transformation, with new data from Barbour ABI’s Domestic Bedroom Furniture report revealing a strong shift toward multipurpose living.

Once dedicated solely as a space to sleep, bedrooms are increasingly doubling as dressing rooms, home offices, and flexible lifestyle spaces – a trend reshaping consumer demand and driving innovation across the furniture sector.

The rise of “polymorphic” spaces is particularly evident in high‑density urban homes, where efficient use of every square metre is essential. Wren’s Bedroom Reset Report (March 2026) highlights the shift - 60% of people now use their bedroom for dressing and grooming, while 16% have converted the space into a workspace.

This evolution is fuelling demand for fitted wardrobes, integrated storage, and multifunctional furniture. Suppliers are responding with new product development focused on modular systems and space‑saving solutions. Sharps’ patented Space+™ formula, for example, delivers up to 40% more storage than standard fitted wardrobes and double the capacity of freestanding alternatives.

“After a strong post‑pandemic rebound, the UK bedroom furniture market has softened since 2023, due to weak consumer confidence, a slowdown in the housing market and intense price competition," says Claudia Preedy, Editor of the report.

"Short‑term prospects remain subdued, with further moderate declines expected in 2026 and 2027. However, a stronger recovery is anticipated in the medium term. Key growth opportunities lie in fitted and space‑saving solutions – including modular storage and multifunctional ranges – plus omnichannel and online expansion.”

Despite short‑term challenges, the sector remains a mature and resilient market. Long‑term demand is expected to be supported by rising household numbers and the growing need for flexible, space‑efficient living environments.
