Experts at Howarth Timber discuss innovation in new podcast episode

Experts from Howarth Timber have shared their insights on how innovation, recycling and sustainability are reshaping the timber industry in the latest episode of the 1840 Podcast, produced in partnership with Kronospan.

The discussion explored the evolution of wood-based panels, including chipboard, MDF and OSB, and how the industry is moving away from traditional “virgin wood” production towards more circular and resource-efficient manufacturing.

According to the Howarth team, customers ranging from DIY retailers to national housebuilders are now driving demand for sustainable and recyclable materials.

“We’re seeing a real shift in the market,” said Andy Moore, National Sales Manager at Kronospan. “Sustainability is no longer a buzzword; it’s a purchasing requirement. Our customers, from kitchen manufacturers like Wren to major builders, want to know where their materials come from and how they can be reused at the end of their life. That’s influencing every product decision we make.”

The episode also examined how the market is adapting to challenges such as rising costs, supply chain pressures and increased global competition, while maintaining focus on product performance and quality.

“It’s about resilience as much as it is about innovation,” added Gary Froggatt, Divisional Manager at Howarth Timber. “Despite a tough market, we’re continuing to invest in partnerships, technology and responsible sourcing so that merchants and builders can rely on us for consistent, sustainable panel solutions.”

With the UK wood-based panel market valued at around £1.8 billion, Howarth Timber sees collaboration with manufacturing partners and merchants as essential to meeting future demand, particularly as timber frame construction and low-carbon building continue to grow.

“We’ve always believed that progress in timber comes from working together,” said Froggatt. “Whether it’s innovation in materials or improving the sustainability of supply, Howarth Timber remains committed to leading that conversation.”
