New frontiers in “batch-one” edgebanding at SCM

Following the interest generated by the 2024 and 2025 editions, which showcased industrial flexible edgebanding solutions adopted by leading customers worldwide, SCM’s advanced technology returns to the spotlight with a new event dedicated to batch-one production of panels and doors.

On 2nd and 3rd December, SCM’s Batch One Days in Thiene (Vicenza) will offer a first look at some of the latest-generation systems developed for different manufacturing environments, all sharing the need to make production more flexible, efficient and responsive to market demands. The focus will be not only on the high performance of individual machines and systems, but also on their ability to fit into integrated production flows and an increasingly digital factory model.

SCM’s new edgebanding and sizing-edgebanding solutions are designed to optimise machining quality, reliability, productivity and customisation, even in the most demanding processing environments. These benefits translate into modular, scalable configurations tailored to each company’s needs and level of automation and integration.

The solutions on show reaffirm SCM’s strategy of making technologies and functions traditionally associated with higher-end systems available to smaller businesses too, at highly competitive prices.

“At the event, we will showcase the results of our ongoing research and development efforts, aimed at making SCM edgebanding solutions increasingly flexible, modular and accessible, without compromising on excellence,” says Luca Bergantini, SCM Business Manager. “Our goal is to give companies the best balance between investment and solution value, bringing industrial-grade technologies and functions to production environments of different sizes.”

As Bergantini points out, this vision applies not only to edgebanding, but to SCM Group’s entire offering for furniture and door manufacturers.

At SCM’s Thiene industrial site, four industrial-grade solutions will be unveiled to meet different production needs: two cells for flexible edgebanding of straight panels, an automated line for door processing, and an edgebander for softforming profiles.

The first solution, a stefani cell h, marks the next step in SCM’s technology for flexible batch-one edgebanding. With a speed reaching 30 metres per minute and output of up to 1,200 panels per shift, it integrates advanced automation and material-flow handling systems, as well as new machining units. Key features include a rounding unit that helps increase productivity and improve finishing quality, ensuring consistent processing, and Maestro active watch supervisory software, which coordinates the process and panel flow.

The second system for straight panels, a stefani cell e, combines a single-sided stefani edgebander, configurable on different platforms (stefani m or stefani x), with a new pickback-e gantry return system designed to provide advanced functionality at an even more competitive investment. The system automatically manages workpiece return and unloading, offering different stacking modes even for panels of different sizes. It can be operated manually or in Batch One mode, with pre-set, automated movements. This modular solution is designed to make industrial-level automation accessible to medium-sized and smaller companies, according to their needs and the degree of process integration.

For the production of doors and partition systems (operable walls), SCM will present an automated solution combining a stefani sb squaring-edgebander with mahros brush systems for loading, workpiece return and unloading. More than 25 metres long, the system is designed to handle large and heavy panels, with a high level of automation and particular attention to finishing quality. The system is monitored by an operator, while material handling is automated.

The solution includes machining units dedicated to door processing, as well as specific devices for finishing corners and profiles, ensuring precise results even on complex, large workpieces.

The line-up is completed by a stefani one edgebander with a roller- and belt-based workpiece return system and electronic set-up, designed to flexibly process a wide range of softforming profiles, including J-shape and 45-degree profiles, and materials such as melamine-faced panels and PVC.

Automatic set-up simplifies changeovers; a dedicated rounding unit also enables finishing of the J profile on the panel’s transverse edge, making the solution highly flexible and automated.

Digital control and integration are another key development in SCM’s edgebanding solutions. Maestro active watch supervisory software monitors the production process, while WinMES, the MES-MOM developed with Tecnest, a company within SCM Group, links production management with company information and workflows.

Depending on the configuration, these technologies help create a more connected and traceable process, aligned with a digital factory model and integrated production flow.

The aim is to connect edgebanding technologies with the overall organisation of production: not just high-performance machines, but solutions designed to integrate into coordinated, scalable and increasingly automated processes.
