Taiwan’s Woodworking Machinery Industry captivates on Opening Day of LIGNA 2025

At LIGNA 2025, the world’s leading woodworking machinery trade fair held in Hannover, Germany, more than 1,400 exhibitors from 49 countries showcased the future of woodworking technologies. Among them, 25 Taiwanese companies presented the strength and momentum of Taiwan’s woodworking machinery industry, with a focus on connectivity, sustainable production, and engineered wood. From forestry management and sawmilling technologies to automation systems and surface finishing solutions, Taiwan exhibitors are unveiling cutting-edge innovations across the entire industry value chain.

On the opening day, the "Taiwan smart machinery Project"—initiated by Taiwan’s Bureau of Foreign Trade (BOFT) and implemented by the Precision Machinery Research and Development Center (PMC)— hosted a joint press conference to spotlight Taiwan’s smart machinery. Taiwanese manufacturers, recognised for their agile system design, high operational efficiency, and long-term commitment to green manufacturing, continue to play a vital role in the global supply chain.

The exhibition featured everything from high-speed CNC machines to automated panel processing lines, showcasing Taiwan’s deep capabilities in precision machining and smart upgrades. The event attracted media from Germany, the UK, Singapore, India, and other countries, with prominent outlets such as BM, WiN, Panels & Furniture Asia, WoodNews Media, and Media66 engaging in on-site coverage. With over 80,000 professional visitors expected from 100 countries, this is a key opportunity for Taiwan brands to demonstrate their global relevance.

Taiwan’s supply chain takes the Global Stage

In 2024, Taiwan’s total woodworking machinery exports reached USD 424 million, making it the world’s fourth-largest exporter in this category. The industry is mainly concentrated in central Taiwan, forming a highly integrated industrial cluster capable of delivering customised solutions quickly and efficiently. With strong efforts toward smart manufacturing and automation, Taiwan has earned a reputation for reliability and innovation on the global stage.

In celebration of LIGNA’s 50th edition, PMC and the Taiwan Woodworking Machinery Association  jointly presented the "Taiwan Select" brand to highlight the nation's strength. During the joint press event, Taiwan conveyed to global buyers that whether it’s growing demand for green building materials, diversified interior design styles, or higher efficiency in furniture production, Taiwanese manufacturers offer comprehensive, application-ready solutions. Decades of R&D and precision engineering allow Taiwanese products not only to serve mid-to-high-end markets, but also to deliver flexible, fully integrated systems trusted by buyers worldwide.

Navigating global trade challenges with Taiwan’s supply chain strengths

Amid growing global trade tensions, the U.S. has recently pushed forward its Reciprocal Tariffs Policy, raising duties on specific industrial goods and manufacturing technologies. This shift has significantly impacted the global manufacturing landscape. For Taiwan’s export-oriented woodworking machinery industry — which relies heavily on European and North American markets — this introduces new price competitiveness pressures and strategic challenges in global deployment.

Mr. Michael Chang, CEO of Leadermac Machinery, shared that the company exports to over 62 countries and has already established robust distribution and after-sales networks in North America, Europe, and Northeast Asia. Despite regional uncertainties, the company remains committed to strengthening its R&D capabilities. Mr. Cliff Chang, General Manager of / SK Global, emphasized the company’s current priority to expand its European market footprint through distributor partnerships, tailored solutions, after-sales support, and compliance assurance.

At the press conference, Mr. Ian Chang, Chairman of the Taiwan Woodworking Machinery Association, noted that beyond market diversification, global buyers now demand both high precision and low energy consumption. For example, INNOVATOR MACHINERY fully automated veneer splicing line dramatically reduces labor costs and material loss while improving yield through precise glue-drying control systems.

Showcasing future-ready smart solutions

At this year’s LIGNA, Taiwanese exhibitors are presenting a wide array of forward-looking solutions, including high-speed auto finger joint machines, four-side planers with feed speeds up to 200 meters per minute, integrated automation systems, and mobile multi-blade saws with scanning capabilities. These innovations highlight not only process efficiency but also the industry's alignment with sustainability and flexible manufacturing trends.

During the joint press event, Taiwan manufacturers emphasised their transformation from traditional equipment suppliers to comprehensive smart manufacturing solution providers. From digitalised production and modular integration to energy management and real-time monitoring, Taiwan is demonstrating both its technical maturity and its competitive edge in the global market.

Driving visibility through strategic marketing at LIGNA

The "Taiwan smart machinery Project" launched with a strong start at LIGNA through a joint press conference on day one. This was followed by an elevator pitch-style product showcase and B2B matchmaking sessions on May 27, drawing immediate attention from key buyers. From May 28 to 30, Taiwan will host three days of flash solutions, offering high-density, high-exposure engagement formats designed to amplify brand visibility. These activities aim to strategically elevate the presence and influence of Taiwan’s smart woodworking machinery sector on the world stage.
