AL-KO – powering cleaner manufacturing for workshops

In small- to medium-sized furniture workshops, dust extraction sits at the centre of daily operations. It affects compliance, staff wellbeing, fire safety, energy costs and overall productivity. Yet many workshops still rely on traditional bag-type extractors that struggle with fine dust, create unnecessary noise and expose operators to airborne particles during emptying.

The AL-KO Power Unit 250, distributed exclusively in the UK by TM Machinery, offers a more considered approach – engineered specifically for modern workshop environments.

AL-KO brings over 50 years of German expertise in air handling and dust control. The Power Unit 250 reflects that background, delivering high performance in a compact footprint suited to CNC routers and small groups of machines commonly found in furniture manufacturing.

When reviewing dust extraction, motor size is often the first consideration.

However, airflow efficiency and overall system design are far more critical. The key is selecting a unit that matches the machines in use and reflects how the workshop operates on a day-to-day basis.

The Power Unit 250 uses highly efficient fan technology to generate the required airflow and pressure with smaller, energy-efficient motors. That means lower running costs without compromising extraction performance – a practical advantage as energy prices remain unpredictable.

Safety is built into the design, not added on. The unit is explosion resistant to dust class ST1, covering wood dust, and incorporates a non-return flap to prevent incidents travelling back towards machinery. The motor, fan and electrics are positioned on the clean side of the system, eliminating ignition sources within hazardous areas.

Day-to-day usability has also been carefully addressed. A sealed disposal system isolates the filtration chamber before the waste bin is removed, preventing the dust clouds often associated with bag extractors. Clear visual indicators show when bins are nearing capacity, with optional ATEX-rated level sensors providing added reassurance.

Airflow management improves both efficiency and filter life. A pre-separation chamber removes heavier particles before they reach the filters, reducing load and extending service intervals. Fine dust is captured by M-class filters, and cleaned air is returned to the workshop – helping retain heat in winter and stabilise temperatures year-round.

Filter cleaning is fully automatic, triggered by run-time or pressure monitoring to maintain consistent performance while minimising compressed air use. The system also monitors filter condition and will issue warnings – or safely shut down if required – protecting both equipment and operators.

Noise levels remain comfortably below regulatory limits, often quieter than the machines connected to it.

Compact, plug-and-play and straightforward to integrate, the AL-KO Power Unit 250 is designed for workshops that want extraction to work efficiently, quietly and reliably in the background – supporting safer, cleaner and more cost-effective furniture production.
