Weinig increases efficiency of small window and door manufacturing businesses

The Weinig SOLID CNC GR 200 V enables batch size 1 production for smaller businesses manufacturing windows, doors, and fire door frames. Automating machining without the need for tool changes, jigs, or full-time operators allows SMEs to achieve high efficiency with a lower investment.

The introduction of the Conturex series almost two decades ago marked a new era in timber window and door production, offering the dream scenario of efficient batch size 1 frame-by-frame production.

The sophisticated and patented technology of the Conturex revolutionised the window production process and, with well over 650 machines installed worldwide, has been an economic game changer for medium and large companies.

Constant product development by Weinig has seen the introduction of the SOLID CNC GR 200 V which brings the concept of batch size 1 to smaller businesses that manufacture windows of all types, traditional doors and fire door frames and screens.

Flexibility is the key ingredient of this machine, as its application is only constrained by your imagination and the tools available.

SMEs can now transform production with minimal investment. The SOLID CNC GR 200 V enables fully automated machining of individual parts,  eliminating the need for tool changes, jigs, fixtures, or a full-time operator.

Planed and cut-to-length components are placed on an infeed buffer that gives around 20 to 30 mins unmanned operation. From that point on, the process is fully automatic until the finished component is delivered to the outfeed buffer.

Components are indexed forward on the buffer, a plausibility check is undertaken to check the component dimensions, and then the piece is driven into the PowerGrip clamps.

The PowerGrip table is driven under the portal on which a powerful 5-axis spindle served by a 30-position tool magazine is mounted. This powerful and proven unit is capable of large stock removal at high feed rates without compromising quality due to the massive cast iron construction of the portal.

Stacked tools up to 230mm in depth and an individual weight up to 8kg can be accommodated, meaning tool changes are minimised with an optimised tool solution, hence maximising productivity. Once the component has been machined on all six faces it is automatically returned and placed on the outfeed buffer.

The SOLID CNC GR 200 V not only performs profiling, slotting, drilling, and routing but also enables the cost-effective production of components with reverse rebates. This capability eliminates the need for coupling screens and doorframes, allowing elements to be manufactured as a single unit and reducing material and labour costs while enhancing the final product’s aesthetics.

The machine is designed for all types of UK windows, fire door frames, and screens. It handles widths up to 260mm, thicknesses up to 140mm, and lengths ranging from 220mm to 4500mm. It consistently delivers high-quality components with precise accuracy, thanks to the extensive expertise and knowledge invested by its German designers. Built with top-tier components and supported by the reliable Weinig service team, it ensures long-term performance and precision.

The SOLID CNC GR 200 V is controlled by the latest Weinig Machine Control software which can be extended with WeinigCAM, offering a powerful CAD/CAM facility that increases the flexibility of the machine.

Full training in the use of the software is included with every machine, giving the user full control of the software and the flexibility the machine offers. Alternatively, the machine can be connected to a proprietary software package providing a seamless link from estimating to production.

The benefits to any business of this proven technology are significant. The SOLID CNC GR 200 V provides an immediate solution to the shortage of skilled labour as, once programmed, everything is automatic. The skill level required is different from what was traditionally required and is far more attractive to the younger generation due to the machine being controlled by a touchscreen HMI.

Compared to a traditional CNC router, labour is employed very efficiently due to the unmanned capability of the machine, allowing other functions to be done while the SOLID is processing components.

Improved labour efficiency brings a range of commercial benefits. With true batch size 1 production, manufacturing becomes made-to-order and just-in-time, reducing the amount of capital tied up in work in progress and finished goods.

This will also free up valuable floor space, as the SOLID CNC GR 200 V fits into a compact footprint of 12 x 5.5m, eliminating the need for many older machines. Additionally, its exceptional accuracy and surface finish reduce the need for remedial work, ensuring a smoother production flow with fewer interruptions.

Overall, the economic case for investing in a SOLID CNC GR 200 V is sound. The price/performance ratio sits perfectly between a conventional 5-axis pod & rail CNC router and the entry-level Conturex Artis+.
